For the study of the pathogenesis of fulminant mouse hepatitis virus(MHV-2), the immune responses in the peritoneal cavity in mice infected intraperitoneally with parent MHV-2 and its mutant MHV-2L were studied. The mice infected with MHV-2L strain produced an intense inflammatory responses. However, MHV-2-infected mice produced a low inflammatory response. At the moribund stage, the total number of peritoneal cells were six times less than those from the uninfected control. Mutant MHV-2L infection induced the enhancement of the Fc receptor-mediate phagocytosis on day 1 post-infection. However, Peritoneal macrophage isolated from parent MHV-2-infected mice showed low phagocytosis and delayed viral clearance in the peritoneum. This finding suggest that the MHV-2 fulminant hepatotropic strain is more virulent in mice than other MHV strains because of low inflammatory response arid hypofunctional antiviral response.
